Windows NT4 Retired!

  • Should you migrate?

  • What are the benefits?

  • How can Cemoc help?

If you are among the many organisations still running NT4, migration to Windows Server 2003 should be high on your list of priorities. Mainstream Microsoft support for Windows NT4 ceased on 31st December 2002, extended support was available until the end of 2004.  There will be no further Service Packs, or security updates available for the operating system.

April 2003 saw the latest release of Microsoft's server operating system.   With Windows Server 2003, Microsoft has introduced compelling reasons for upgrading from Windows NT4, or even Windows 2000.

These include:

  • Increased reliability, performance and security
  • Enhanced backup and restoration capabilities
  • .NET Architecture
  • Improved Active Directory implementation

With Windows Server 2003, Microsoft has built, and improved upon the successful Windows 2000 platform, to produce a server operating system that is secure, reliable, highly available, and scalable. Performance gains of over 450% against systems running NT4 have been achieved using the same hardware!   This, coupled with features such as Volume Shadow Copy, Remote Installation Services, Software Update Services (all included), and the enhanced security methodology - with the server locked down by default, combine to offer a state of the art server operating system.

Migration to Windows Server 2003 - particularly from NT4, is not a project that should be undertaken lightly.   A successful implementation is only realised from correct understanding, planning, and testing.   Cemoc can offer extensive assistance, whether you require a complete migration service, telephone support, or simply to talk through your options.
